ChatGPT is a free website where you can type or speak any question and get a helpful, plain-English answer. Setting it up takes about five minutes, and you can make the text as large as you need. This tutorial walks you through your very first session, one step at a time.
ChatGPT is a free website where you can have a real conversation with an AI — typing a question and getting a thoughtful, plain-English reply. Millions of people use it every day to write notes, get explanations, look things up, and brainstorm ideas. This tutorial takes you through your very first session, step by step, with no assumptions about what you already know.
Open your browser and go to ChatGPT
On your computer, phone, or tablet, open the internet browser you normally use — Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge all work fine. In the address bar at the top of the screen, type chatgpt.com and press Enter or tap Go.
You'll land on a page with a large text box near the bottom. That box is where you'll type your questions.
Create a free account
You can try a few questions without an account, but creating one lets you save your conversations and use ChatGPT without interruptions.
Click Sign up and enter your email address, then choose a password. You can also sign in with an existing Google or Apple account if you have one — this skips the need to create a new password.
ChatGPT will ask for your birthdate (for age verification) and a couple of short questions about how you plan to use it. Just answer honestly.
Make the text bigger so it's easy to read
Before you type your first question, make everything on the screen larger. This is a built-in browser trick that works on any website:
- Windows computer: Hold the Ctrl key and press the + key. Repeat until the text feels comfortable. Press Ctrl and – to go back if you overshoot.
- Mac computer: Hold the Command key and press the + key.
- Phone or tablet: Pinch two fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, just like zooming into a photo.
Do this now, before you start typing, so everything is easy to read throughout your session.
Type your first question
Click inside the text box at the bottom of the screen and type a question. Anything you've been curious about works. Here are a few safe and easy ones to start with:
What's a good way to start walking more at age 70?
Explain what high blood pressure means in simple words.
Write a short thank-you note to my neighbor who brought me soup.
Press Enter or click the arrow button. ChatGPT will type out its answer on the screen, usually within a few seconds. You can then ask a follow-up question — just like a conversation. If an answer is confusing, type "Can you explain that more simply?" and it will try again.
Try speaking instead of typing
If typing is difficult or tiring, ChatGPT has a voice mode — you speak your question out loud and it responds. Look for a small microphone icon near the text box and tap or click it. Speak your question naturally, and ChatGPT will hear you, convert your words to text, and reply.
If you are using ChatGPT on a phone, you can also tap the microphone icon on your phone's keyboard at any time to dictate your message, even without using ChatGPT's built-in voice mode.
Explore a few safe starter topics
Some topics are ideal for a first session — low stakes, interesting, and a good way to see what ChatGPT can do:
- Recipes: "Give me a simple chicken soup recipe for two people."
- Word explanations: "What does 'atrial fibrillation' mean in plain English?"
- Writing help: "Help me write a birthday message for my grandson who just turned 16."
- History questions: "Tell me about the history of Route 66 in two short paragraphs."
- Travel ideas: "What are some good places to visit in Arizona in the winter?"
These let you see how the tool responds without worrying about the stakes.
Know what to keep private
ChatGPT is helpful, but there are a few things you should never type into it — or any website that wasn't specifically set up to receive them:
- Social Security number
- Bank account or credit card numbers
- Passwords or PINs
- Your full home address
ChatGPT helps with words, ideas, and questions. It has no reason to ask for financial or identity information. If any tool claiming to be AI asks for those details, leave immediately.
