Meta AI on Facebook and Instagram: What It Can Do for You

The short answer

Meta AI is a built-in assistant on Facebook and Instagram that can answer questions in search, help you write captions, and suggest edits to photos. It shows up as a blue circle or an AI icon inside these apps. You do not need to install anything extra — it is already there.

You have probably noticed the blue circle or the sparkle icon popping up inside Facebook and Instagram. That is Meta AI — and it is more capable than most people realize. It is not just a chatbot sitting in a corner; it is woven into search, into comments, and into photo editing.

Here is how to actually use it, what it is good at, and a few things to keep in mind about your privacy.

Find Meta AI in Facebook search

Open the Facebook app and tap the search bar at the top. You will see a prompt to ask Meta AI a question. This is different from searching for posts or people — it is a direct question-and-answer experience.

Try typing a question like "What are some easy dinner ideas for a family of four?" or "Who is the current leader of Canada?" You get a conversational answer, not a list of posts to scroll through.

Chat with Meta AI directly

On Facebook, tap the Meta AI icon (the blue circle) to open a direct chat. On Instagram, tap the icon in the direct messages area or start a new message to Meta AI.

Once you are in the chat, you can ask anything you would ask a general-purpose assistant — help writing something, explaining a topic, coming up with ideas. The chat history stays there so you can return to a previous conversation.

Get help writing a caption on Instagram

When you are creating a new post on Instagram, look for the AI suggestion option near the caption field. Tap it, describe what you want — for example, "fun caption for a beach photo with friends" — and Meta AI will suggest a few options.

Pick one you like, edit it to match your voice, and post. It is a handy shortcut when you know you want to say something but cannot find the right words.

Use AI photo editing tools on Instagram

Instagram has several AI-powered editing features built into the photo editor. Look for options like Remove (to erase an object from a photo), Replace Background, or Relight when you are editing an image before posting.

Select the tool, follow the on-screen instructions to mark what you want to change, and the app will generate the result. Some tools work better on simple photos than on busy or crowded scenes.

Ask Meta AI in a Facebook comment thread

In Facebook posts or groups, you can tag Meta AI in a comment the same way you would tag a friend: type @MetaAI and then your question. Everyone in the thread can see the AI's reply.

This works well when someone in a group asks a factual question and you want to share an answer quickly, or when you are looking for ideas in a group context. Just remember that the response is public in that thread — do not share personal details this way.

Review your privacy settings

Go to Settings and Privacy in Facebook or Instagram, then look for an AI or Meta AI section. Here you can see what data Meta uses to personalize your AI experience and make adjustments.

It is also worth reviewing the broader Privacy Checkup tool in Facebook if you have not done it recently. AI features are part of a larger picture of how Meta uses your activity.

What Meta AI does not do

Meta AI does not automatically read or analyze your personal posts or photo albums. It responds to what you actively share with it in a chat or a prompt. It cannot access your friends' private profiles, send messages to other people, or make purchases.

Like all AI assistants, it can get things wrong — especially on recent news or niche topics. If it tells you something that matters, double-check it.

Spotting AI-generated content in your feed

Now that AI tools are widespread, you will start seeing AI-generated images and text in your feeds. If something looks a little too perfect or feels slightly off, read how to spot AI-generated photos — a useful skill to have.

Frequently asked questions

Is Meta AI the same on Facebook and Instagram?
It is the same underlying AI assistant, but the features available depend on which app you are in. Instagram puts more emphasis on image editing; Facebook surfaces it more in search and in comments.
Does Meta AI post on my behalf?
No. Meta AI can suggest text for captions or comments, but it will not post anything without you tapping the publish button.
Can I turn off Meta AI on Facebook or Instagram?
You cannot fully disable Meta AI from the apps, but you can ignore it and adjust privacy settings to limit how it uses your activity. <!-- EDITOR: verify current opt-out options in app settings -->
Does Meta AI see my private messages on Facebook?
Meta says your end-to-end encrypted Messenger conversations are not used to train or power Meta AI. Direct conversations you start with the Meta AI account are processed by Meta's servers.
Can Meta AI edit my photos on Instagram?
Yes. Instagram has AI-powered editing tools that can remove objects, change backgrounds, and adjust lighting. Some of these are powered by Meta AI. <!-- EDITOR: verify which tools are live in the current app version -->
