A text lands on your phone: “Your package couldn’t be delivered — confirm your address here,” or “Unusual activity on your account, verify now,” or “You’ve won a prize — claim it today.” These messages are built to make you act fast, before you have time to think it through. Scammers count on that rush. AI won’t click anything for you, but it’s very good at spotting the pressure tactics and odd details that give a scam text away.
Copy the message — or type it out — and ask ChatGPT or Gemini:
"Here’s a text message I received: paste the full text. Does this look like a scam? Point out anything specific that makes you suspicious or reassured, and tell me what I should do next."
You’ll usually get a clear answer plus the reasoning behind it — a mismatched sender number, urgency that doesn’t fit how that company normally contacts you, a link that doesn’t match its real website. You can also paste in a screenshot if that’s easier than retyping the text. Try it on the next few odd messages you get, even ones that seem obviously fine — it’s a useful habit to build before the message that really matters shows up.
One thing to watch: never click a link in a suspicious text, even just to “check” it — if the message claims to be your bank, a delivery company, or a government agency, contact them directly through their official app or a phone number you look up yourself. Treat AI’s read as a second opinion, not a guarantee: when in doubt, don’t click and don’t reply.
