From October 9, 2026, Google is narrowing which Gemini models you can use on a personal account. Google explains the change on its own help page for the Gemini app. Gemini itself stays free.
What changes, by plan:
- Free (no Google AI plan): you can no longer pick a model. Gemini chooses one for each question automatically ("Auto"). Most questions go to the fastest and lightest model, Flash-Lite, and questions that need deeper reasoning may go to the more capable Flash or Pro. If you turn smart model selection off, every answer comes from Flash-Lite.
- Google AI Plus (the lower-priced paid plan): you lose Pro and keep Flash-Lite and Flash. Google says AI Plus subscribers get an email explaining the date the change reaches their account.
- Google AI Pro and AI Ultra: you keep Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro.
Google's page also says you can set each available model's effort level to low, medium or high. Higher effort gives more thorough answers but uses up your limit faster, so for everyday questions a lower level is usually enough. The limits themselves are not new: since May 2026 they refresh every five hours up to a weekly cap, and paid plans get more.
Google's page doesn't say why it made the change. It covers personal accounts only and says nothing about work or school accounts or about differences between countries.
What it means for you. If you use free Gemini, you may notice shorter or less thorough answers to some questions, because most of them now go to the lightest model. That isn't a fault in the app. For anything important, such as health, money or legal paperwork, double-check the answer with an official source or a professional. Our guide to what not to tell an AI chatbot still applies.
Should you pay? You don't have to. Free Gemini keeps working, and there is nothing you need to do. If you only subscribed to AI Plus to get Pro, that reason is gone, so check what you actually use before the next renewal. You can also compare options: free ChatGPT now offers unlimited text chats, and our free chatbots comparison and paid plans comparison cover the rest.
One safety tip. News like this attracts scammers. Only change or buy a plan inside the official Gemini app or on gemini.google.com, never through a link in an email, text or ad. Be wary of any message that pressures you to "act now" or asks for card or login details to "keep your access".
Not sure the rollout reaches you on the same day, or in your country? Google's page doesn't say, so check the help page or the model menu in your own app.
