Turn Your Family Photos into a Slideshow Video with AI (Free)

Everyday life Tutorial7 min read·Updated July 4, 2026
The short answer

You can turn family photos into a polished slideshow video for free using apps like Google Photos, Canva, or CapCut on your phone. Pick your photos, let the AI arrange them with music, and download the finished video in a few minutes.

Old photos sitting in your phone's camera roll deserve better than just scrolling past them. With AI tools, you can turn a pile of family photos into a real video — with music, smooth transitions, and a professional look — in about five minutes, entirely on your phone.

No editing skills. No computer. No cost.

Gather the photos you want to use

Start by collecting the photos you want in the video. You don't need to move them anywhere yet — just scroll through your phone's camera roll and note which ones you want to use.

A few tips for choosing photos:

  • Aim for 10–30 photos for a 1–3 minute video. Fewer than 8 feels too short; more than 40 can feel long.
  • Mix close-ups and wider shots — it makes the video more dynamic.
  • Don't worry about perfect quality. AI tools handle slightly blurry or older photos well.

If you want to restore faded or old photos first, that's worth doing — there's a guide to restoring old photos with AI that takes about 10 minutes.

Pick your AI tool

Here are three free options, all phone-friendly:

Google Photos (Android and iPhone) The simplest option. If you already use Google Photos to back up your camera roll, it's already there. It can auto-generate a video, or you can pick specific photos and create one yourself.

CapCut (Android and iPhone) Free app with more creative control — better music selection, text overlays, and transition styles. The AI will auto-arrange photos and suggest a theme.

Canva (Android and iPhone, or browser) If you already use Canva, it has a video creation feature that works well for slideshows. More design options than Google Photos, but a little more to navigate.

For a first-timer, start with Google Photos. It requires the least work.

Select your photos and create the video

In Google Photos:

  1. Open the app and tap Library at the bottom.
  2. Tap Utilities, then Movie.
  3. Select the photos you want (tap each one to add it).
  4. Tap Create and Google Photos will arrange them automatically with music and transitions.

In CapCut:

  1. Open the app and tap the + button.
  2. Select your photos from your camera roll.
  3. Tap Auto or choose a video template. The AI picks music and transitions to match your photos.

In Canva:

  1. Open Canva and tap + to create a new project.
  2. Choose Video as the format.
  3. Browse templates labeled "Slideshow" and tap one you like.
  4. Replace the placeholder images with your own photos.

Add or change the music

All three tools include background music automatically. If you don't love the AI's choice:

  • In Google Photos, tap the music note icon to browse other tracks
  • In CapCut, tap the music bar at the bottom of the editor and pick from their free library, or upload your own audio file
  • In Canva, tap the audio track in the timeline and replace it

If you're sharing the video privately with family, using any music is fine. If you plan to post it publicly on YouTube or social media, stick to tracks labeled royalty-free to avoid copyright issues.

Preview the video and reorder photos if needed

Before you download, press Play and watch the whole thing through. Look for:

  • Photos that appear in a weird order (drag them to reorder)
  • Any photo that looks out of place or should be removed
  • Whether the video feels too long or too short

Most apps let you drag photos in the timeline to rearrange them. In CapCut you can also adjust how long each photo stays on screen.

Download and share

When you're happy, tap Download or Export. The video saves to your camera roll as an .mp4 file.

From there you can:

  • Share it directly to WhatsApp, iMessage, or Facebook
  • AirDrop it to family members
  • Save it as a memory for a birthday, anniversary, or holiday
  • Upload it to a private YouTube or Google Drive link to share with relatives

What to try next

Now that you've got a photo slideshow, try making a fully AI-generated video from a text prompt — no photos needed, just a description of a scene. Or if you want to design a shareable card or invitation around one of your favorite photos, Canva's AI tools make that easy too.

Can I make a photo slideshow video on my phone for free?
Yes. Google Photos, CapCut, and Canva all have free photo-to-video features that work directly on your phone. No computer needed.
Does Google Photos automatically make videos from my photos?
Yes. Google Photos periodically creates Memories videos on its own. You can also trigger it yourself by selecting photos and tapping the 'Create' option.
What app is best for turning photos into a video on iPhone?
Google Photos and CapCut both work well on iPhone. If you want maximum simplicity, Google Photos is already installed on many Android phones and free to download on iPhone.
Can I add my own music to the slideshow?
Yes. CapCut and Canva both let you upload your own audio file or pick from a library of royalty-free music. Google Photos uses its own music selection.
Will the video have a watermark on the free plan?
Google Photos does not add a watermark. CapCut's free plan adds a watermark by default, but you can often remove it within the app. Canva's free plan generally doesn't watermark personal downloads. <!-- EDITOR: verify current watermark policies -->
